Reuse Ethos · About

Our Case for Making with What Already Exists

A small balcony is a big opportunity to keep good material in use a little longer.

Why Reclaimed, Why Balconies

VorkadFunBalcony is an independent site for resourceful beginners and weekend makers who live with a few square metres of outdoor space. We love the idea at the centre of the circular economy, championed by organisations such as the Ellen MacArthur Foundation: keep materials in use at their highest value for as long as possible. A wine crate that becomes a herb trough, or a pair of shutters that becomes a screen, does exactly that.

But reuse only counts if the result is safe and lasts. Balconies are exposed, shared with neighbours below and governed by building rules. So every guide here starts with the condition and provenance of the item, offers a use that suits it, and is explicit about drainage, finishes, upkeep and secure placement.

How We Write Our Guides

01 · Condition first

Each project opens with what to check and when to walk away. A beautiful idea built on rotten timber is not a project.

02 · Sources we trust

We draw on published guidance from bodies such as the Royal Horticultural Society, the UK Health and Safety Executive and the IPPC's ISPM 15 standard, and say so in the text.

03 · Clear limits

We separate lightweight décor from structural work. Railings, walls and anything fixed to the building are questions for building managers and qualified professionals.

04 · Honest images

Our 3D renders and exploded views are conceptual illustrations. They help you see parts and layers; they are not tested construction evidence.

What We Are Not

We are not engineers, surveyors or your landlord. We do not sell materials, accept paid placements in our guides, or receive commission on products. If a project depends on a load calculation or a permission, we will tell you to get one rather than guess.
